To the letter writer defending countywide blight as a right (Journal, Aug. 12):

When I moved to the Four Corners about 12 years ago, I sought a home with what I heard was the trifecta of natural landmarks – the Sleeping Ute, the La Plata Mountains and Mesa Verde. Lucky me, I’m blessed with views of all three.

About 10 years ago, a neighbor decided to place a fifth-wheel trailer in the foreground of Mesa Verde. It’s not going anywhere. Year after year, the high desert sun has taken its toll on this abandoned hulk. I look to the west at Sleeping Ute and again – too bad, neighbor – broken-down cars, trucks and more junk compromise my view of this sacred mountain. Why would our neighbors think that’s OK?

It’s a short ride on the big blue ball we call Earth. And it just may be our heaven.

When you place broken-down vehicles, farm machinery, tires and other junk on your property, you are desecrating the natural beauty of this special place we call home. I know trash when I see it. Those who believe that hoarding and displaying their refuse in our faces is a “right” are not good stewards of the land – and it’s not your right. Convince me otherwise, county commissioners.
